Gabriela National Alliance of Women, since its establishment in 1984, has consistently fought to advance women’s rights and eliminate all forms of violence against women (VAW). Gabriela has already launched several campaigns on VAW such as the international campaign Purple Rose (Campaign Against Sex Trafficking), SHOUT ( Sexual Harassment Out), Blow-a-Whistle campaign. Such campaigns gathered enormous support. Gabriela has already advocated for legislative reforms, especially with the entry of its political party, Gabriela Women’s Party, in congress. This political party is among the proponents of RA 9262 or the Anti-Violence Against Women and Children Law and RA 8208 or the Anti Trafficking in Person Act.

- Every 18 hours and 50 minutes, there is a victim of sexual abuse

- For every 9 hours, there is a child victim of sexual harassment

Violence against women and children remains rampant. Although there is a growing public awareness on the issue, more often than not, the term violence against women immediately brings to mind wife battering, rape, sexual harassment. In reality, there are so many more forms of violence against women or the violation of women’s rights; ranging from personal to political. More alarming are the continuing misconceptions regarding violence against women. E.g. Blaming the victim for her fate, Regarding VAW cases as personal/private/family matters.
What then, is iVow?
iVow is an awareness campaign on Violence Against Women. In time for Gabriela’s 25th year, the campaign will be launched as a commitment to fight violence against women.
